The University of Embu Numeracy project team led by Dr. Simon Karuku, Research Chair in Mathematics Education, participated in a two-day engagement forum with HERI Africa to strengthen understanding of Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning (MEAL) in the implementation of the Numeracy Project.
The meeting provided a platform for participants to deepen their understanding of the HERI Africa MEAL framework and strengthen their capacity to monitor, document, and track evidence-based implementation of the project activities.
Through presentations and interactive discussions, participants explored key project interventions, impact pathways, outcome indicators, and accountability mechanisms that would support effective project delivery.
The sessions also highlighted the importance of continuous monitoring, documentation and learning in achieving the project objectives. Participants engaged in discussions on how evidence generated through project activities can be used to improve implementation, inform decision-making and demonstrate impact.
The engagement concluded with reflections and agreed action points aimed at strengthening project implementation and fostering a culture of learning and accountability. By demystifying MEAL concepts and expectations, the meeting enhanced the capacity of the project team to effectively track progress, generate evidence and contribute to improving foundational numeracy outcomes.
The HERI Africa Research Chair in Mathematics Education is hosted at the University of Embu and forms part of the HERI Africa initiative, a Pan-African program committed to advancing Africa-led education research for impact.
