Significant Milestone as University of Embu Launces HERI Africa Research Chair in Mathematics Education to Strengthen Foundational Numeracy

The University of Embu joined the global community in commemorating the International Day of Mathematics through the launch of Harnessing Education Research for Impact (HERI) Africa Research Chair in Mathematics Education on 12th March, 2026. The launch of the Research Chair in Mathematics Education solidifies the University’s commitment to transformative high-quality education through innovative, evidence-driven research, strategic partnerships and sustainable capacity building. The event hosted at the University of Embu brought scholars, educators, researchers, policy makers and students to witness the launch of a key regional hub that will contribute to advancing foundational numeracy through generating high-quality, policy-relevant research, professional development, academic engagement and collaborations, and community support and engagement.

Mr. Darius Mogaka Ogutu, Director of Higher Education in the State Department for Higher Education, who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, underscored the critical role of research in bridging learning gaps in mathematics to improve the quality of educational outcomes. He highlighted that strengthening foundational numeracy through evidence-based research is vital to ensuring education systems adapt effectively to the evolving needs of learners and lifelong learning.

Speaking during the launch, the University leadership led by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Daniel Mugendi stressed that the initiative marks a departure from traditional academic models towards research that is directly aligned with societal needs. In his address, the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Daniel Mugendi noted that the establishment of the Numeracy Research Chair represents a major milestone in advancing evidence-based education, particularly within the framework of the ongoing Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) reforms. Prof Ciriaka Gitonga, Coordinator, HERI-Africa Research Chairs-Kenya, stressed the transformative potential of the initiative by generating action-oriented research in Africa. Similarly, Prof. Dickson Andala, Chief Executive Officer of the National Research Fund, reiterated that research initiatives such as the HERI Africa Research Chairs create a strategic platform for scholars to generate evidence that drives action and reforms ultimately elevating educational outcomes

By anchoring research within African contexts and priorities, the HERI Africa Research Chair is Mathematics Education is poised to advance evidence-based education reforms, strengthen research capacity, and nurture learners to thrive in increasingly complex social environments.
