The University

History

Sixty-nine years from an agricultural training school on the slopes of Mount Kenya to a chartered public university.

The University of Embu traces an unbroken line back to 1947. Each change of name below is tied to the instrument that made it.

1947

An agricultural training school

Teaching began on the site that is now the University of Embu. The live History page names the 1947 institution only as an agricultural training school.

1968

Embu Institute of Agriculture

The school was renamed the Embu Institute of Agriculture.

1990

Embu Agricultural Staff Training College

Upgraded to Embu Agricultural Staff Training (EAST) College, mandated to develop and run short management and technical courses and to offer research and consultancy services to improve performance in the agricultural sector.

17 June 2011

Embu University College

Legal Notice No. 65 of 17th June 2011 converted the College into Embu University College, a constituent college of the University of Nairobi. Its Council was inaugurated by President Mwai Kibaki.

7 October 2016

University of Embu

The institution was awarded its Charter by H.E. President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House, Nairobi, completing the transition from a constituent college of the University of Nairobi to a fully fledged public university.

Where the record needs tightening

The live History page abbreviates Embu University College to EUC without ever expanding it, and gives the 1947 institution no name beyond “an agricultural training school”. Both should be settled with the Registry before this page is published. The founding name in particular is the sort of detail a chartered university is expected to be able to state.
