Endowment Fund

Capital that keeps a student in class

Since 2018 the University of Embu Endowment Fund has invested every gift it receives and spent only the return, so it can go on supporting talented, needy students in perpetuity. Need-based support that pays fees and meals for the coming year, rather than building permanent capital, is run separately by the Office of the Dean of Students — see the Student Support Fund in Student Life.

Four pillars

How the Fund is run

Governance

An independent Board of Trustees, appointed by Council under the Fund’s Trust Deed, holds ultimate responsibility for the Fund.

Fundraising

An Implementation Committee runs the Fund’s outreach to donors, alumni and partners, including its gala and marathon.

Investment

Credible investment managers deploy the capital across asset classes, targeting at least 200 basis points of annual return.

Impact

Only the return is spent, on named endowments, sponsored programmes and, at the pooled fund’s discretion, direct student support.

How the Fund works

Capital that is never spent

Since 2018 the Fund has built its capital to approximately KES 40 million. The Board of Trustees has set a target of approximately KES 10 billion, the scale at which the return alone can carry priority programmes across the University.

Ways to endow

Donors can deposit seed capital, give directly to the Fund, or sponsor an identified programme or cause. A gift above KES 10 million can stand alone as a permanent endowment, and a gift above KES 5 million as a term endowment.

Gifts below KES 5 million are pooled into one combined fund decided by the Board. Any currency convertible to the Kenya shilling is accepted.

How it is managed

Credible investment managers invest the capital, aiming for growth and preservation, with performance monitored and investment kept to areas of minimal risk. The Leadership and Integrity Act, 2012 applies throughout, so no personal interest can override the Fund’s.
